On June 2, 2024 the parishes of St. Mary's and St. Michael's hosted a Eucharistic procession for the Feast of Corpus Christi. It was on this day that we met for the first time. We both noticed each other at different moments during the procession, and afterwards we were asking our friends and family "Who is that!?". At the party following Mass, Erika was busy spending time with her family - taking pictures and chasing nieces and nephews around - while Matthew was patiently waiting for the opportunity to ask her out. That chance finally arrived at the end of the party, and as Matthew was approaching Erika... his mother, Dawn, cut him off and started asking Erika about her dress from Poland! (Mom apparently had her eye on Erika for Matthew, too). So, Matthew let them chat for a minute before his mother realized it was time to step aside. "Do you want to get coffee sometime this week?" and "Yea, yes, sure!" were the words that followed. We decided to get coffee after Mass that Friday morning and never exchanged numbers - we simply trusted - and the rest is history. We were engaged on July 19, 2024 after praying the Rosary along the same procession route on which we met. Jesus brought us together and has continued to lead us, and we are beyond grateful for the ways in which he has prepared the two of us to become one through the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Today, St. Michael’s parishioners represent a wide array of ethnic backgrounds. Visitors can still hear Polish hymns and lamentations during special masses and celebrations throughout the year. Baskets are still blessed at Easter and sumptuous Polish food served at events in the Family Center. Most certainly, the many names of the generous donors from the 1940s etched into the church’s magnificent stained-glass windows will always keep St. Michael’s a “Polish parish.”
But the ultimate legacy of Muskegon’s hard-working and pious Polish immigrants and their descendants remains their unwavering faith, commitment and foresight to build and financially secure St. Michael the Archangel Parish as a welcoming place for all Catholics to worship God for generations to come.
